In 2018, we launched Only in Appalachia, a campaign aimed at rewriting the Appalachian narrative.
Modern media often portrays Appalachia as an ambition-less, simple-minded place, with little to no progress occurring. As Appalachians know, that is not the reality. There is no single mold that you can fit these people into, and that's why we're here. Only in Appalachia exists to tell their stories. The real stories.
Only in Appalachia is a series of photos, videos, conversations, and more which highlight the positive taking place in Appalachia. Our team travels throughout the region to capture, learn, and listen to people that we find inspiring. Through meaningful conversations, we try to push out impactful content aimed at finding the truth.
Our founding team is comprised of six volunteers who are passionate about championing the Appalachian region. Some of us have grown up here, others have moved in, but with our unique and dynamic skill sets, we aim to tell the real story of Appalachia. If you are interested in joining our team, email us here.
Where is Appalachia?
Technically Appalachia is defined as thirteen states (includes all of West Virginia and parts of 12 other states: Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia). But we believe Appalachia is more than a geographic location. It is a set of virtues, values, and tradition.
